Start a Backyard Garden: 11 Steps for New Gardeners

How To Start a Backyard garden

Use these gardening tips step-by-step to transform your backyard into a beautiful garden.

  1. You can find your climate zone by looking up your estimated first and final frost dates.
  2. You should decide what you will grow. Consider your climate zone, your personal preferences, and the space you have available.
  3. The ideal location for your garden is a flat area near a building that will provide some wind protection.
  4. A cordless or battery-powered drill is needed to create drainage holes in found objects that are being converted into planters. The hori-hori knife can be used to divide clumps, as well as for other coarse gardening tasks.
  5. The fifth step is to test your soil. A soil test can be ordered for a nominal fee from your local USDA cooperative service office. This will tell you if you need to make any adjustments to your soil.
  6. No-till gardening is a great alternative to traditional tilling. After removing the grass and debris, spread four inches of compost over the area.
  7. You don’t want to choose the largest plants, because they are “root-bound.” These seedlings are likely to have a thicket beneath the soil of roots that has outgrown the pots. They may not be able to adapt well to the garden.
  8. You should plant your seeds and seedlings carefully. To do this, place your hand over the soil and gently squeeze it. Then, take the soil and lightly massage it until the roots no longer stick to the pot.
  9. You should water your plants when the soil feels dry but not soggy.
  10. Mulch is a great way to keep your soil cool and moist.
  11. The plants will tell you what to do. If a leaf is yellow or deformed, it is time to clip it. A plant that is collapsing from its own weight needs to be staked. Overgrown, dense vegetation requires careful pruning in order to allow sunlight and air to circulate.
